Some people do dozens of crunches and abdominal exercises a day and still find it impossible to lose the excess fat and skin around the midsection. Luckily, there is a solution. Abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck, body sculpting , body lift , body contouring ” is a cosmetic procedure sure to give you a sleeker more defined abdominal section.
Abdominoplasty begins with an incision made from one hip to the other, creating a skin flap. Next, the skin is separated from the abdominal muscles, which are then tightened, narrowing the waistline and flattening the midsection. The flap of skin is then folded down and excess skin is removed. Last, the flap is replaced and the incision is stitched closed. The entire procedure takes between two and five hours, depending on how much work is needed. Bruising and swelling (which typically subside within 10 days) are the most common side effects of abdominoplasty.
The size of the abdomen can be reduced through a tummy tuck. Yet, tummy tuck focuses on addressing the weakened protruding muscles in the abdomen and excess skin. Liposuction may be required to achieve a fully satisfactory outcome. Panniculectomy may be performed to achieve stronger results such as those necessary for a post obese person. Mini-tummy tuck’s focus on the lack of requirement for extensive muscle and skin elasticity improvements. Abdominal etching helps to create a “six pack” abdominal appearance.
The fundamental approach to a tummy tuck involves an extensive horizontal incision across the top of the pubic area. The skin will be separated from the abdominal wall. Then, excess skin and fat are removed. The tissue connecting the navel may be removed which will alter the navel. Finally, the muscles are lifted, re-positioned and sutured tightly together. The belly button is sutured in place.
The Mini Tummy Tuck does not require extensive incision, muscle repositioning, or excess skin removal. The plastic surgeon may use an endoscope to visually guide the surgeon through a small incision to the treatment area.
Mini tummy tucks address situations where the muscle elasticity is lost in the lower abdomen wall only. A mini tummy tuck concentrates on the area below the bellybutton—the most frequent site of elasticity loss. Mini tummy tucks are especially effective in correcting problems resulting from pregnancy.
A tummy tuck can remove excess loose abdominal skin and fat that may be hereditary or acquired after substantial weight loss or pregnancy. The procedure also tightens abdominal muscles that have been separated and weakened by pregnancy or lack of activity. The procedure may also reduce the appearance of stretch marks, especially those located below the navel.
Tummy tuck scars are one of the major drawbacks of abdominoplasty cosmetic surgery. The extent of tummy tuck scars depends on the extent of the surgery that is performed. Tummy tuck scars are much less extensive with a partial or lower tummy tuck than they are for a full tummy tuck. Tummy tuck scars are permanent but are generally concealed under a bikini or other clothing. With healing, it is normal for tummy tuck scars to actually get worse three to six months after surgery before they get better. After nine months to a year, tummy tuck scars will flatten out and lighten in color.
As anesthesia is used, there is no pain during the procedure. A certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Mild discomfort is usually easily controlled.
As with all medical procedures, there are risks associated with tummy tuck.
Risks associated with tummy tuck are reduced when pre and post operative instructions are followed by the patient. Most patients are fully satisfied with the results of the procedure.

The benefits of substantial weight loss are seemingly endless—improved overall health, boosted confidence, a more fit body, and a better outlook on life to name a few. But unfortunately, extreme weight loss—such as that experienced by a recipient of bariatric surgery—can leave the skin stretched, sagging, and hanging and buttocks flat and unshapely. A body lift will trim away excess skin and tighten remaining tissue, leaving the body taut and toned. The techniques used in body lift are very similar to those used in abdominoplasty, except that the body lift is a more involved, in-depth procedure. Body lift results can be life changing.
Body Lift Surgery is a solution for anyone who’s lost a significant amount of weight. He or she has excess skin and loss in skin elasticity on their face, breasts, back, trunk and thighs.
Orange County Plastic Surgery patients who are candidates for body lifts are usually those who have undergone bariatric surgery (gastric bypass surgery, gastric band, lapbands etc.) and now have loose or hanging skin.
There are several groups of candidates for the extensive surgery involved in a body lift. The first group includes patients who have lost a great amount of weight, either through gastric bypass surgery, intestinal bypass surgery or change in nutrition and fitness habits.
Although the steps of the body lift procedure differ depending on the needs of the patient, doctors often perform surgery on the stomach first, removing excess skin from the belly button to the pubic area and then tightening the abdominal wall muscle. This is the area that is most often loosened by pregnancy or weight loss. The fat and skin from above the belly button is pulled down and sutured in place, and the belly button is pulled out to its normal position.
Recovery from the body lift can be painful and extended. Patients have tubes and drains left in their skin for one to two weeks post surgery to drain any tissue fluid or blood. They are encouraged to walk right away, and progressively move more as days pass. Most patients resume normal activity in four to six weeks after body lift surgery. .
The results are long lasting, usually for many years.
